Old Buckenham windows back in

Last panel put in position
Nearly two days work but the final medieval window was put back in position in All Saints Church this afternoon. Lots of rebuilding of the many panels has gone on at the workshops of Devlin Plumber over the last eighteen months and the glass is now back where it belongs.
The blog editor was there to watch the last space being filled.

Medieval windows back in Old Buckenham

Our glass angels are being refitted
These panels were removed in April 2014 and have been away with local firm Devlin Plumber Stained Glass since then. Today the work in returning the renovated panels to their appropriate place in the tracery of the windows is being carried out. It is time consuming work as each panel has to be individually fitted.
The medieval glass now sits behind clear glass panels so that it will not be greatly affected by the outside weather and will be preserved in the church for many, many years to come.

Producing stuff in Old Buckenham

Think about your entries
There is another big event in the village during September that needs lots of participation by Old Buckenham residents but does not involve cycling. It is the annual Produce and Handicraft Show. This is organised by the Old Buckenham Women’s Institute and takes place in the Village Hall on Sunday 13 September (the day after all the cycling activity).
Those putting in their exhibits need to have them there at the hall before 11am so that judging can begin. The hall opens again at 2.30pm so that you can come and see how well your exhibits have done. With all the keen activity at the allotments there may be some new entrants wanting to show off their skills.
Even if you have not managed to enter any flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, eggs, art, cookery, preserves or photographs you can enjoy looking at all the entries and seeing who has done well.
Children’s entries are free and making them could be just the thing you need to keep the children occupied at the end of the summer holidays.

If you can’t find the schedule that was distributed with the July newsletter then you can ring Doris on 01953 861322 to get another one.

Bradley Wiggins coming to Old Buckenham

Tour of Britain rushes through in September
Saturday 12 September is the date when famous cyclists will pass through Old Buckenham on their way from Norfolk (Fakenham) to Suffolk (Ipswich). The official tour website indicates that the cyclists will be through between 12.02pm and 12.26pm with an optimum time of 12.14pm. The timetable shows that they are expected to take just one minute to get from the Old Buckenham road sign in Attleborough Road to the crossroads at the start of Crown Road. Don't blink or you may not see them pass.
Remember there is plenty of other entertainment and cycling on and around the Green that day so make the best of an opportunity unlikely to come again for many, many years.

Chicory Tip perform in Old Buckenham

Remembering the music of the seventies

Have you got your tickets yet to see the real Chicory Tip (not a tribute band of youngsters) at their concert in Old Buckenham Village Hall on Saturday 22 August? The performance will start at 8pm and tickets cost £8 each.
The band were 'Top of the Pops' with their song 'Son of my Father' which was the number one hit in the UK Singles chart for three weeks in February 1972.
If you do remember the song and would like to hear more about it then tune in to BBC Radio Norfolk on Wednesday 12 August when there will be an interview with one of the band's members. It will be part of what is normally the Stephen Bumfrey show which this week is being presented by Chrissie Jackson and the interview is expected to take place at about 2.30pm.

If you can't remember the song then that is even more reason to tune in and listen. Of course you can listen later via the BBC Radio Norfolk website, or i-player or even by recording it using Freeview on channel 719.
The concert here in Old Buckenham will be a great night out so get you tickets now. You can email boxofficeobvh@gmail.com or call 01953 860866.

Colourful Old Buckenham allotments

Lots of plants now in flower
In October 2010 the Old Buckenham allotments had just been marked out on a newly ploughed field. Lots of effort has gone in to fight against the weeds and the local fauna. The site is rather colourful at the moment with flowering plants and vegetables enjoying some sunshine.
Potatoes, runner beans, yellow courgettes, pumpkins, artichokes, sunflowers and sweetcorn are all doing their bit to brighten up the place.

Perhaps we will see some of the ripened produce an the show benches when the village Produce and Handicraft Show takes place in the village hall on Sunday 13 September.

Day two at Old Buckenham Airshow

More sun and even more people
It was more fine weather for the second day of the Old Buckenham Airshow. There were crowds of people sitting in the sun waiting for the air displays to start. Some got prepared with a nice cup of tea while others joined various queues for their fish and chips, ice cream, doughnuts, etc. The newly-completed toilet block at least reduced the queuing elsewhere on site.
Once the aircraft started flying, the cameras were out in force to record the hair-raising displays. Then it was just a matter of emptying a huge field full of hundreds and hundreds of cars.

Saturday 1 August 2015

Day one at Old Buckenham Airshow

Fun in the sun
The blog editor knows that taking photographs of fast moving aeroplanes is a skilled activity so he has chosen to mainly show pictures of more slow moving objects at the first day of the Old Buckenham Airshow.
The car park started to fill up early and there was a regular flow of people though the entrance gates. There were lots of things to do before the flying display in the afternoon. You could go for a helicopter ride, sit in a very large car while it drove over some other cars, examine various classic cars, look at some classic aircraft, enjoy an alcoholic drink in the shade of the trees or just sit down and wait for the display to start.

Eventually it was time to wend your way back to the car park, start on a journey home and to savour the enjoyable day that you have had.
